Nautica was launched in 1983 as a sporty American fashion company by David Chu. The earliest fragrance was released by the company in 1992. This and subsequent scents were created and distributed in collaboration with the American manufacturing company Coty. Many designers worked on these fragrances including Maurice Roucel, Patricia Bilodeau, Harry Fremont and Michel Mane.
The company had its beginnings in men’s apparel, and its catalog expanded throughout the 1980s. Women’s wear, children’s clothing, furniture, accessories and home goods have all joined the company’s product line. By integrating nautical themes into product names and designs, the brand has created an outdoorsy collection of items that reveal the active American lifestyle.
